Zakouma National Park
A conservation turnaround story — elephants recovering in Sahelian savanna.
About
Zakouma lost the great majority of its elephants to poaching before management was overhauled; numbers have since stabilised and grown, and the park's herd is one of the largest in Central Africa. Dry-season concentrations at the Rigueik pans bring elephant, buffalo, Kordofan giraffe and enormous flocks of quelea and crowned crane into a small area.
