The clouds get there first. Long before you see anything that looks like a mountain, you feel the Rwenzori as weather — a grey ceiling that slides down over Kasese in the late morning and turns the afternoon into something soft and dripping. Locals barely look up. The Bakonzo have lived under this ceiling for centuries, and their name for the range, as the explorer Henry Stanley recorded it in May 1888, translates roughly as Rain-Maker, or Cloud-King. It is less a description than a job title.

Then, perhaps once in three days, the ceiling lifts. What appears is genuinely difficult to accept: ice, on the equator, in Uganda. Margherita Peak stands at 5,109 metres on Mount Stanley — Africa's third-highest summit after Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya — and it carries what is left of a glacier system that has been shrinking for a century. The Alexandrine geographer Ptolemy wrote about these mountains in AD 150 without ever seeing them, calling them the Mountains of the Moon and naming them as the source of the Nile. He was wrong about the hydrology and right about almost everything else.

Most of East Africa's famous high ground is volcanic. Kilimanjaro and Mount Elgon are cones; they were built upward by eruption. The Rwenzori were not. They are a block of ancient rock shoved bodily into the sky by tectonic movement along the Western Rift Valley — a 120-kilometre wall of uplifted crust, roughly 65 kilometres across, running along Uganda's border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. That origin explains the shape of the place. There is no single graceful cone to photograph from a distance. Instead there are six massifs, a tangle of ridges and gorges, and valleys so steep and so permanently wet that the trails through them have a reputation among trekkers as the muddiest on the continent.

Uganda Wildlife Authority protects the highest 996 square kilometres of the range as Rwenzori Mountains National Park, gazetted in 1991. UNESCO inscribed it as a World Heritage Site in 1994, and in 2008 it was additionally designated a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance — an unusual double listing that acknowledges something visitors often miss. The Rwenzori are not only a mountain. They are a water tower, and the bogs, tarns and saturated moorlands on their flanks feed rivers that eventually reach the Nile.

What makes a Rwenzori trek unlike anything else in Africa is how quickly the world changes around you. You begin in dense montane forest, all buttressed trunks and colobus monkeys and the sudden electric flash of a turaco. You climb through bamboo, which closes over the trail like a corridor. Above that comes the heather zone, where tree heathers grow to the size of oaks and hang so heavily with moss and old man's beard that the light turns green.

And then, somewhere above 3,500 metres, you walk into the Afro-alpine zone and the vegetation stops making sense. Giant lobelias stand two and three metres tall like botanical streetlamps. Giant groundsels branch overhead. Everlasting flowers crunch underfoot. Moss coats the boulders in a thick wet pelt. It is a landscape that has convinced generations of visitors that they have wandered off the map, and it exists at this scale in only a handful of places on Earth.

The wildlife is quieter than the flora, and deliberately so. UWA records more than 70 mammal species and 217 birds in the park, including 19 Albertine Rift endemics — the Rwenzori turaco, the handsome francolin, the Rwenzori double-collared sunbird among them. Forest elephants, chimpanzees, giant forest hogs and the Rwenzori duiker are present but rarely obliging. Nobody comes here for a game drive. People come for the strangeness of the ground itself, and for the peaks.

This is the part worth being honest about: the Rwenzori are not a casual stop. Reaching Margherita Peak is a nine- to twelve-day technical ascent involving glacier travel, fixed ropes, crampons and a real risk of altitude sickness. It is a mountaineering objective, not a hike, and it should be treated as one.

But the park has quietly become far more accessible than its summit reputation suggests. Shorter, non-technical treks of three to five days reach the heather and lower Afro-alpine zones — which is where the scenery peaks anyway — and require good fitness rather than technical skill. Two licensed concessionaires run the main routes: Rwenzori Mountaineering Services on the historic Central Circuit out of Nyakalengija, and Rwenzori Trekking Services on the Kilembe Trail from the south, generally considered the more scenic approach and the better acclimatisation profile. For those with no interest in climbing at all, the Bakonzo villages ringing the park offer guided nature walks, homestead visits, cultural performances and home-cooked meals — a day of it teaches you more about the mountain's meaning than a week on the trail.

Timing matters more here than in almost any other Ugandan park. The drier windows — roughly late December to February, and June to August — offer the best chance of firm ground and open views, though "dry" in the Rwenzori is a relative term and rain should be expected in any month. Kasese is the gateway town, six to seven hours by road from Kampala via Fort Portal or Mbarara, and it sits conveniently close to Queen Elizabeth National Park, which makes a natural pairing for anyone building a western-Uganda itinerary.

Come prepared for wet. Gaiters, waterproof boots, a genuinely waterproof shell and a dry-bag system for your sleeping kit are not optional refinements on this mountain; they are the difference between a memorable trek and a miserable one. Porters carry the loads, and the porter and guide corps drawn from surrounding Bakonzo communities is one of the more direct examples of tourism revenue reaching households in Uganda.

There is an unavoidable subtext to any Rwenzori story now. The glaciers that made these mountains famous — the ones that stunned Stanley's party and drew the Duke of the Abruzzi's 1906 expedition, which put the first climbers on Margherita — have contracted dramatically over the past century. The ice fields that once spread across several peaks have retreated to remnants on Stanley, Speke and Baker. Glaciologists have been warning for years that equatorial African ice is on a short and shortening timeline, and the Rwenzori is the case study.

That gives the park a quality few destinations have: it is a place where the changing climate is not an abstraction in a report but a thing you can look at. Whether the ice survives the century is not really in question. Whether the forests, bogs and water systems beneath it are protected is — and that is the part visitors are actually paying to sustain.
