Yamoussoukro
A planned capital in the savanna, built around an enormous basilica.
About
Yamoussoukro was the home village of Côte d'Ivoire's first president and became its political capital, laid out with boulevards far wider than the traffic needs. Its centrepiece is the Basilica of Our Lady of Peace, a vast domed church consecrated in 1990, set in gardens outside a town where crocodiles are kept at the presidential palace lake.
