Timbuktu
The Saharan city of manuscripts and mud-brick mosques.
About
Timbuktu was a terminus of the trans-Saharan caravan trade and a centre of Islamic scholarship whose libraries held hundreds of thousands of manuscripts, many of them saved and moved when the city came under attack in 2012. Its three great mud-brick mosques — Djingareyber, Sankore and Sidi Yahia — are UNESCO-listed and re-plastered by the community each year.
