Skeleton Coast

Shipwrecks, fog and desert lions where the Namib runs into the Atlantic.

About

The Skeleton Coast takes its name from the whale bones and wrecked ships along it — the cold Benguela current meets desert heat and generates a dense fog that has driven vessels aground for centuries. It is stark and almost empty, home to enormous Cape fur seal colonies at Cape Cross, desert-adapted elephant and lion inland, and gravel plains that run unbroken to the horizon.
