Siwa Oasis
Salt lakes, palm groves and a mud-brick fortress deep in the Western Desert.
About
Siwa sits in a depression hundreds of kilometres from the Nile, close to the Libyan border, and keeps its own Amazigh language and customs. Springs feed date and olive groves, salt lakes take on an unreal blue, and the ruined mud-brick fortress of Shali rises over the town. The oracle temple here is the one Alexander the Great is said to have consulted.
