On the foothills of Mount Elgon, Sipi Falls is a series of waterfalls tumbling off cliffs with views over the plains below. Local guides lead hikes to each of the falls, and the area is known for Arabica coffee — many visitors join a farm tour to pick, roast and brew their own cup.

The sound reaches you before the water does — a low, steady roar rolling down through banana groves and Arabica terraces on the northern shoulder of Mount Elgon. Then the trail bends, the forest opens, and the main Sipi Falls drops 100 metres off a black volcanic lip into a green amphitheatre, throwing up a cool mist that drifts across the coffee gardens below. This is Sipi, in Uganda's Kapchorwa District, where three separate waterfalls tumble off the same ancient volcano and where, for generations, farmers have grown some of East Africa's finest Arabica coffee in the shadow of the spray.

The road out of Mbale climbs before you notice it is climbing. One moment the matatus are weaving through banana stalls and roadside maize roasters on flat red earth; the next, the windows have filled with green terraces stacked like amphitheater seating, and the air has lost its lowland thickness. This is the beginning of the ascent to Sipi Falls, a cluster of three waterfalls tumbling off the western slopes of Mount Elgon in Kapchorwa District, roughly 270 kilometers and a full climate zone away from Kampala. Where Uganda's tourism story is so often told through silverback gorillas parting the mist in Bwindi, Sipi tells a quieter one, of water, volcanic rock, and coffee that has been grown on these same terraced slopes for generations.

The first sound you hear at Sipi is not the roar most visitors expect but a kind of low, steady exhale — water falling three hundred feet down a basalt cliff into a gorge thick with banana leaves and drifting mist. Stand close enough to the main fall and the spray drifts sideways in the wind, catching the morning light in bands that flicker and vanish. Locals in Kapchorwa District speak of a mountain that weeps year-round, and after a night in one of the cliffside lodges that cling to the escarpment above the valley, it is easy to understand why the description has stuck for generations.
