Simien Mountains
Escarpments, gelada troops and one of the great trekking landscapes in Africa.
About
The Simiens are an eroded volcanic massif of jagged pinnacles and thousand-metre escarpments, protected as a national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Trekking here is the point, on routes from day walks to two-week traverses reaching Ras Dashen, Ethiopia's highest peak at 4,550 metres. Gelada — grass-eating primates found only in Ethiopia — graze in troops of hundreds, largely unbothered by walkers.
