Mauritius
A reef-ringed island where Creole, Indian, Chinese and French cultures share a small space.
About
Mauritius is almost entirely encircled by coral reef, which gives it calm lagoons and the beaches it is known for. Inland it is more interesting than the resort brochures suggest: the gorges and waterfalls of Black River, the sacred crater lake at Grand Bassin, the colonial port architecture of Port Louis, and a food culture drawing on Indian, Chinese, African and French cooking in equal measure.
Highlights
- Black River Gorges hiking
- Grand Bassin crater lake
- Port Louis central market
- Le Morne and kitesurfing
