Leptis Magna
The best-preserved Roman city in Africa, on the Mediterranean shore.
About
Leptis Magna was the home city of the emperor Septimius Severus, who rebuilt it on an imperial scale — a forum, basilica, market, theatre and triumphal arch, much of it still standing and remarkably complete, with sand having protected the stone for centuries. It is among the most impressive classical sites anywhere, and among the least visited.
Highlights
- Arch of Septimius Severus
- Severan Basilica
- Seaside theatre
- Hadrianic Baths
