Lamu Old Town
A Swahili town of coral stone and carved doors, with no cars on the island.
About
Lamu is the oldest continuously inhabited Swahili settlement in East Africa and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its streets are too narrow for cars — transport is on foot, by donkey, or by dhow — and the architecture is a distinctive blend of Swahili, Arab, Persian and Indian influence, with coral-rag walls, inner courtyards and famously elaborate carved doors. Shela beach runs for twelve empty kilometres.
