About
Lake Assal lies 155 metres below sea level in a volcanic depression, one of the saltiest bodies of water on earth. Salt crusts the shoreline in white shelves against black lava, and caravans still come to load salt by hand. The drive from the capital crosses the Grand Barra desert and the rift landscape that makes Djibouti geologically remarkable.
