About
Kunta Kinteh Island — long called James Island — sits mid-river upstream of Banjul, its ruined fort eroding into the water. With the related sites at Albreda and Juffureh it forms a UNESCO listing that records the Gambia river's role in the Atlantic slave trade. Boats up the river pass mangrove creeks that are some of the best birdwatching in West Africa.
