Iona National Park

Angola's largest park, where the Namib desert runs north of the Kunene.

About

Iona is the northern continuation of the Namib, a desert park of dunes, gravel plains and welwitschia running down to the Atlantic, with the Kunene river as its southern boundary. Himba and Mucubal families herd here, oryx and springbok are returning under new management, and the coastline is as empty as the Skeleton Coast on the Namibian side.

Highlights

  • Namib dunes and gravel plains
  • Welwitschia plants
  • Himba and Mucubal herding country
  • Empty Atlantic coastline

Where to stay in Iona National Park

There is almost nothing to book at Iona. One lodge, Omauha Lodge, appears in Angolan hotel listings for the park area, but we could not confirm it is currently taking guests, so it is not listed here. In practice Iona is visited on 4x4 expeditions arranged in Namibe or across the border in Namibia, camping in the park with a permit. Come self-sufficient, with fuel and water.
