Entebbe sits on a peninsula in Lake Victoria, forty-five minutes from Kampala and minutes from the international airport, which makes it the country's natural first and last night. It is also a destination in its own right: the botanical gardens run down to the shore, Ngamba Island's chimpanzee sanctuary is twenty minutes out by speedboat, and Mabamba Swamp nearby is the most reliable shoebill site in East Africa.

The lake announces itself before you ever see it. Somewhere past the roundabouts of Kampala, as the road curls south toward Entebbe, the air changes first — thicker, cooler, faintly mineral, carrying the sound of weaverbirds and the distant thrum of an outboard motor. The tilapia hits the grill with a hiss just as the sun drops behind the papyrus, and for a moment every conversation on Entebbe Beach pauses to watch it go. Fishermen haul in dugout canoes streaked with lake mud. A Boeing on final approach into Entebbe International Airport slides low over the water, its silhouette cutting through a sky gone the color of mango flesh, and nobody so much as looks up — this is simply what evening looks like here, at the point where Uganda's capital of aviation meets the shoreline of Lake Victoria.
