Danakil Depression
Sulphur springs, salt flats and a lava lake, in one of the hottest places on earth.
About
The Danakil sits more than a hundred metres below sea level in the Afar Triangle, where three tectonic plates are pulling apart. Dallol's hydrothermal field is a landscape of acid pools and yellow, orange and green sulphur crusts that looks like nowhere else on the planet, and Erta Ale holds one of the world's few persistent lava lakes. Afar salt caravans still cross the flats by camel.
