Carthage & Sidi Bou Said

Punic and Roman ruins on the sea, next to a blue-and-white clifftop village.

About

Carthage was the capital of an empire that rivalled Rome, and the ruins spread along the coast north of Tunis — the Antonine Baths, the Punic ports, hillside villas and a theatre still in use. A tram ride away, Sidi Bou Said is a village of whitewashed walls and cobalt doors looking down on the Gulf of Tunis, and the two are usually visited as one easy day out of the capital.

Highlights

  • Antonine Baths
  • Punic naval harbour
  • Sidi Bou Said cafés
  • Bardo Museum mosaics
