Black River Gorges

The island's last native forest, walked above waterfalls and gorges.

About

Black River Gorges protects what remains of Mauritius's native upland forest, and the trails here run along ridges above deep green valleys to viewpoints over the Alexandra Falls and the south coast. It is the last refuge of the Mauritius kestrel and pink pigeon, both brought back from the edge of extinction, and a complete change from the island's beaches.

Highlights

  • Macchabée ridge trail
  • Alexandra Falls viewpoint
  • Mauritius kestrel and pink pigeon
  • Chamarel coloured earths nearby
