Avenue of the Baobabs
A dirt road lined with thousand-year-old trees found nowhere else on earth.
About
Grandidier's baobabs grow only in Madagascar, and along this stretch of road near Morondava a few dozen of them stand in a row thirty metres tall, remnants of a dense forest that was cleared around them. They are eight hundred to a thousand years old. Sunset is when almost everyone comes, and the site has recently been given formal protected status after years of pressure from farming and traffic.
Highlights
- Sunset along the avenue
- Baobab Amoureux, two trees entwined
- Kirindy forest and fossa nearby
- Tsingy de Bemaraha further north
