Asmara
A highland capital of modernist architecture, built in the 1930s and largely intact.
About
Asmara sits at 2,300 metres and is a UNESCO site for its architecture: an Italian-built modernist city of cinemas, villas, art deco bars and a service station shaped like an aeroplane, laid out along palm-lined avenues. The altitude keeps it mild, the café culture is serious, and much of the centre is walkable in a morning.
