Aït Benhaddou & the High Atlas

A fortified earthen village on the old caravan route over the mountains.

About

Aït Benhaddou is a ksar — a cluster of earthen houses packed inside defensive walls — rising above the Ounila river on the route that once carried caravans from the Sahara to Marrakech. It has stood in for ancient cities in many films, but the interest is in the building itself: rammed earth and mud brick, repaired each year, with the High Atlas passes and the Tizi n'Tichka road just behind.

Highlights

  • Hilltop granary views
  • Tizi n'Tichka pass
  • Ounila valley kasbahs
  • Ouarzazate film studios
